About Tipping
Standard Tip Percentages
In the US, standard restaurant tip is 15–20% of the pre-tax bill for good service, with 20–25% for excellent service. For poor service, 10–15% is acceptable. Coffee shops and fast casual: $1–2 or 10–15%. Taxi/rideshare: 15–20%. Hotel housekeeping: $2–5/night. Hair stylist: 15–20%.
Tip on Pre-Tax or Post-Tax?
Tipping etiquette varies — both are acceptable. Some prefer tipping on the pre-tax amount (the actual service cost), while others tip on the total including tax. The difference is small: on a $100 bill with 10% tax, tipping 20% on pre-tax = $20, post-tax = $22. We calculate on the pre-tax bill amount you enter.
Tipping Culture by Country
Tipping customs vary greatly worldwide. In the US and Canada, tipping is expected and often essential to service workers' income. In Japan, tipping can be considered rude. In Europe, rounding up or leaving small change is common. In China, tipping is uncommon at most restaurants. Always research local customs when traveling.
Bill Splitting Etiquette
For equal splits, everyone pays the same regardless of what they ordered. For itemized splits, each person pays for their own items. Some restaurants can split bills between cards. Digital payment apps (Venmo, PayPal, WeChat Pay, Alipay) make after-dinner splits easy — one person pays and others transfer.
