About Cosine (cos)

In trigonometry, the cosine of an angle is the ratio of the length of the adjacent side to the length of the hypotenuse in a right-angled triangle.

Formula

cos(θ) = Adjacent / Hypotenuse

Properties

The cosine function is periodic with a period of 2π (360°). Its value oscillates between -1 and 1. It is a shifted version of the sine function.

Common Values

  • cos(0°) = 1
  • cos(30°) ≈ 0.8660
  • cos(45°) ≈ 0.7071
  • cos(60°) = 0.5
  • cos(90°) = 0

Applications

  • Calculating horizontal components of vectors
  • Waveform analysis and signal processing
  • Structural engineering and architecture
