About Tangent (tan)
In trigonometry, the tangent of an angle is the ratio of the length of the opposite side to the length of the adjacent side in a right-angled triangle.
Formula
tan(θ) = Opposite / Adjacent = sin(θ) / cos(θ)
Properties
The tangent function is periodic with a period of π (180°). It is undefined at 90°, 270°, etc., where cos(θ) = 0.
Common Values
- tan(0°) = 0
- tan(30°) ≈ 0.5774
- tan(45°) = 1
- tan(60°) ≈ 1.7321
- tan(90°) = Undefined
Applications
- Calculating slopes and inclines
- Determining heights and distances in surveying
- Navigational calculations
