About Discounts
Discount Formula
Discounted Price = Original Price × (1 − Discount%). Savings = Original Price × Discount%. Discount% = (Original Price − Sale Price) / Original Price × 100%. For example, a $80 item with 25% off: Sale price = $80 × 0.75 = $60. Savings = $80 × 0.25 = $20.
Stacked Discounts
Multiple discounts don't simply add up. A 20% discount followed by a 10% discount is NOT a 30% total discount. First: $100 × 0.8 = $80. Then: $80 × 0.9 = $72. Total savings = $28, or 28% — not 30%. Combined discount = 1 − (1 − 0.2)(1 − 0.1) = 1 − 0.72 = 28%.
Discount vs. Markup
Discount and markup are calculated differently. A 20% discount means selling at 80% of original price. A 20% markup means adding 20% to cost. If cost is $100 with 20% markup, price = $120. If original price is $120 with 20% discount, sale price = $96. They are not exact inverses of each other.
Psychological Pricing
Retailers use psychological pricing tactics: prices ending in .99 or .95 feel lower than round numbers. Showing the original price crossed out with a sale price creates perceived savings. '50% off' is more compelling than 'save $5' even if the absolute saving is the same. Shoppers often focus on percentage off rather than actual price.
