About Race Pacing

Common Race Distances

5K (5 km) is great for beginners and speed work. 10K (10 km) requires a balance of speed and endurance. Half marathon (21.0975 km) is a popular intermediate challenge. Full marathon (42.195 km) is the ultimate endurance test. Ultra-marathons exceed 42.195 km and require months of specialized training.

Split Time Strategy

A split is the time taken to complete each kilometer or mile segment. Even splits mean each km is run in the same time. Negative splits mean the second half is run faster than the first. Research shows that negative splits or even splits lead to better overall times compared to going out too fast (positive splits).

Marathon Pace Guide

A sub-4-hour marathon requires a pace of 5:41/km. Sub-3:30 requires 4:58/km. Sub-3:00 (competitive) requires 4:16/km. For a first marathon, a conservative strategy is to run the first half at 3–5 seconds per km slower than goal pace, allowing energy reserves for the challenging final 10 km.

Race Day Factors

Weather significantly affects race performance. Ideal race temperature is 7–15°C. Heat above 20°C slows pace by 2–5% per degree. Humidity above 60% further impairs cooling. Altitude reduces oxygen availability. Wind resistance can add 2–8% energy cost. Account for these factors when setting a realistic goal pace.
