About Running Pace
What is Running Pace?
Running pace is the time it takes to cover one unit of distance, expressed as minutes per kilometer (min/km) or minutes per mile (min/mile). Pace is the inverse of speed. A pace of 5:00 min/km equals a speed of 12 km/h. Tracking pace is essential for training at the correct intensity and racing strategically.
Pace vs Speed
Pace and speed measure the same thing from different perspectives. Pace = time ÷ distance. Speed = distance ÷ time. Runners typically use pace (min/km or min/mile), while cyclists and swimmers more commonly use speed. Converting between them: Speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ Pace (min/km).
Training Pace Zones
Easy/recovery pace: 60–70% of race pace. Long run pace: 65–75% of race pace. Tempo/threshold pace: 85–90% of race pace. Interval/speed pace: 95–105% of race pace. Easy runs should make up 80% of training volume, with hard workouts limited to 20% to prevent overtraining and injury.
Pacing Strategy
Even pacing (running each km at the same pace) is generally the most efficient strategy for distance events. Negative splits (slightly faster second half) can improve performance by avoiding early fatigue. Many elite marathon runners finish 1–2 minutes faster in the second half. Avoid starting too fast, which depletes glycogen early.
