About Walking and Calories

MET Values for Walking

MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) measures exercise intensity relative to rest. Walking MET values: slow walking at 3 km/h = MET 2.5, normal walking at 5 km/h = MET 3.5, brisk walking at 6.5 km/h = MET 4.5, very fast walking at 8 km/h = MET 6.0. Formula: Calories = MET × weight(kg) × time(hours).

Health Benefits of Walking

Regular walking provides substantial health benefits including reduced cardiovascular disease risk, improved blood sugar control, stronger bones and muscles, better mental health, and weight management. The WHO recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week. Brisk walking qualifies as moderate intensity.

Steps and Calories

The 10,000 steps per day goal is popular but the actual calorie burn depends on pace and body weight. At 5 km/h, a 70 kg person burns approximately 300 kcal per hour. 10,000 steps covers roughly 7–8 km and burns approximately 300–400 kcal for most adults. Even 7,000–8,000 steps daily provides significant health benefits.

Maximizing Walking Benefits

Walking uphill increases calorie burn by 3–7 times compared to flat terrain. Adding weight (backpack) increases burn proportionally. Interval walking (alternating fast and slow) can increase overall calorie expenditure. Walking after meals helps with blood sugar control. Morning walks on an empty stomach may enhance fat burning.
