About BMR

What is BMR?

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body needs to maintain basic physiological functions while at complete rest. These functions include breathing, blood circulation, cell production, and temperature regulation. BMR accounts for about 60–75% of total daily calorie expenditure for most people.

Mifflin-St Jeor Equation

The Mifflin-St Jeor equation, developed in 1990, is widely regarded as the most accurate method for estimating BMR. For males: BMR = 10×weight + 6.25×height − 5×age + 5. For females: BMR = 10×weight + 6.25×height − 5×age − 161. Weight is in kg, height in cm, age in years.

Factors Affecting BMR

BMR is influenced by several factors: body composition (more muscle = higher BMR), age (BMR decreases with age), gender (males generally have a higher BMR), genetics, hormonal levels (thyroid hormones), and environmental temperature. Regular exercise and building muscle can increase your BMR over time.

BMR vs TDEE

BMR represents the minimum calories needed at rest, while Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) represents the total calories burned daily including activity. TDEE = BMR × Activity Factor. Understanding your BMR is the first step to calculating your actual daily calorie needs for weight management goals.
