About BMI

What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value calculated from a person's weight and height. It provides a simple and widely used measure to classify individuals into underweight, normal, overweight, or obese categories. BMI is used worldwide as a screening tool for identifying potential weight problems in adults.

BMI Formula

Metric: BMI = weight(kg) ÷ height(m)². Imperial: BMI = 703 × weight(lbs) ÷ height(in)². For example, a 70 kg person who is 1.75 m tall has a BMI of 70 ÷ (1.75²) = 22.9, which falls in the normal range.

BMI Categories

BMI below 18.5 is considered Underweight. 18.5–24.9 is Normal Weight. 25.0–29.9 is Overweight. 30.0 and above is Obese. These thresholds are defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) and are used by health professionals globally.

Limitations of BMI

BMI does not directly measure body fat and can misclassify individuals. Athletes may have a high BMI due to muscle mass. Elderly individuals may have a normal BMI but carry excess fat. It also does not account for fat distribution, gender differences, or ethnic variations in body composition.
